What Is HYROX? Understanding the Race Format

HYROX combines endurance running with functional strength training in a standardized race format.

Every individual competitor completes 8 kilometres of running and 8 functional workout stations, alternating between running and strength-based challenges.

The official HYROX workout sequence includes:

  1. 1 KM Run + 1,000m SkiErg
  2. 1 KM Run + 50m Sled Push
  3. 1 KM Run + 50m Sled Pull
  4. 1 KM Run + 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. 1 KM Run + 1,000m Row
  6. 1 KM Run + 200m Farmer’s Carry
  7. 1 KM Run + 100m Sandbag Lunges
  8. 1 KM Run + 100 Wall Balls

Depending on your division, weights and workload distribution vary.

HYROX isn’t simply about lifting heavy or running fast. Successful competitors must balance cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, pacing, movement efficiency, and recovery between stations.

That’s why structured HYROX training in Victoria, BC can make such a difference.

Why Train for HYROX Vancouver at BPM Fitness Centre?

As Victoria’s first HYROX gym, BPM Fitness Centre provides specialized equipment, experienced coaching, and race-specific programming designed to prepare athletes for competition.

Our facility features two fully equipped training studios with sled lanes, turf, Concept2 SkiErgs and RowErgs, kettlebells, sandbags, wall balls, and treadmills.

More importantly, our coaching team understands the demands of competition firsthand.

BPM is home to HYROX World Champion Madelyn Eybergen, who earned gold in her age category at the 2026 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

That competitive experience helps shape an environment where beginners and experienced athletes alike can develop their skills.

Build Race-Ready Fitness With BPM’s HYROX Classes

Our 60-minute HYROX group fitness classes combine functional strength, cardiovascular conditioning, and movement technique.

Rather than repeating full races every workout, our coaches incorporate progressive training designed to develop:

  • Running endurance: Improve pacing and cardiovascular capacity.
  • Functional strength: Build confidence with sleds, carries, lunges, and wall balls.
  • Muscular endurance: Maintain efficient movement throughout longer efforts.
  • Race transitions: Practise returning to running after demanding stations.
  • Movement efficiency: Refine technique to reduce unnecessary fatigue.

We also offer Strength and Conditioning classes to complement HYROX-specific training.

Experience Race Day Before Vancouver With a HYROX Simulation

One of the best ways to prepare for HYROX Vancouver is to experience the complete race format before competition day.

BPM offers Private HYROX Simulations that recreate the demands of competition in a controlled, coach-led environment.

Each private simulation includes:

  • Up to two hours of exclusive Studio A access
  • All eight HYROX workout stations in race order
  • Eight kilometres of indoor treadmill running
  • RX race weights and equipment
  • Coaching, judging, and pacing guidance
  • Options for Singles, Doubles, or four-person Relay teams

Private simulations cost $399 for up to four participants.

A full simulation helps identify pacing challenges, practise transitions, and highlight areas requiring additional attention before Vancouver.

Fine-Tune Your Running Performance

Running represents a significant portion of every HYROX race, making efficient running mechanics essential.

BPM’s Performance+ Running Assessment evaluates functional movement, aerobic fitness, and treadmill running mechanics to help athletes better understand their performance.

For competitors struggling to maintain running pace between stations, personalized assessment and coaching can help identify practical areas for improvement.

Combining running development with HYROX-specific strength training creates a more balanced preparation strategy.

Your Final Weeks Before HYROX Vancouver

With race weekend approaching, focus on consistency rather than dramatically increasing training volume.

Prioritize quality HYROX sessions, sustainable running workouts, adequate recovery, and practising the movements you’ll encounter during competition.

Doubles athletes should also rehearse communication, station workload distribution, and pacing strategies with their partners.

As race day gets closer, gradually reduce training fatigue while maintaining familiarity with your race pace and technique.

Most importantly, trust the preparation you’ve completed.
